Designing a Tablescape: The Basics

Regardless if you're new to laying out tables for events or a pro hostess who just wants to catch up on the latest trends, here's a few simple steps to get you started.

See the completed table here

Step 1:  Start with a Foundation

I begin each table with the basics: a table, preferably against a wall or window, and a tablecloth.  I like to use a tablecloth with color so it gives my serving pieces a little pop.  Next, I add a backdrop. This is a personal preference and is by no means a necessary part of your table, but it does add a little pizzazz and can draw your guests into the imaginary world your creating for your event.

*Helpful hint: Tablecloths can be pricey and making one yourself doesn't save much money and certainly doesn't save time.  So instead, I purchase a $5 twin sheet from the local store.  It's the perfect size and already hemmed.

Step 2:  Height Elements

I work from the back to the front.  Start with your height elements in the back center of your table and work your way out.  This height element can be a tiered cake, cupcake stand, vases, or any other item that adds interest and depth to your tablescape while creating a little height.  This height gives your eyes something to focus on.  It's very similar to the layout of a magazine or newspaper.  Your eyes travel from the most predominate image on the page (or in our case, the table) in a clockwise motion.  If you're eyes don't have anything to grab their attention, they will simply glance over the table, with nothing to hold their interest.

Step 3:  Filling in the Table

Once again, I work from back to front.  Gradually add your other serving pieces to the table.  Taller items in the back and work your way down to plates and trays in the front.  This not only makes sense from a design perspective, but from a serving perspective as well.
